Food

Eating between stops, when nothing is open

পথের মাঝে খাওয়া

The single most common complaint about a day out here is not the roads. It is arriving somewhere hungry at three in the afternoon.

Away from the towns, lunch is a window rather than an option. Small eating places cook for the middle of the day and are often finished by three; village tea shops keep going, but tea and a biscuit is not lunch after a hill.

This is why every circuit on this site names a meal anchor. It is usually a town — Bankura, Bishnupur, Jhargram, Baghmundi, Raghunathpur — and the plan is built around passing through it at the right hour rather than hoping for something on the road.

We do not list restaurants yet. Small establishments open, close and change hands, and a stale listing sends people to a shuttered door. When we do list them, each will carry the date it was last checked.

Carry water and something to eat, always, and carry cash. Assume no card and no UPI outside the towns, and assume the tea shop that saved your afternoon cannot break a large note.
