How to photograph terracotta without damaging it

The Bishnupur panels are five centuries old and photographed thousands of times a year. Most of the harm is accidental.
Terracotta panels reward patience because they are shallow relief: they read almost flat in overhead light and come alive when the sun is low and raking across them. Early morning and the last hour are not a stylistic preference here, they are the difference between seeing the carving and not.
The damage is rarely dramatic. It is hands on the brick to steady a shot, bags brushing a corner repeatedly, tripod feet set inside a protected line, people climbing a plinth for a better angle. Multiply any of those by a season of visitors.
So: no contact, no climbing, no leaning. Keep a tripod outside marked boundaries or leave it in the car. Do not wet a surface to bring out detail, and never take a rubbing.
One editorial note. The Temples at Bishnupur have been on India’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 1998. They are not an inscribed World Heritage Site, and captions that say otherwise are one of the most repeated errors about this region.
